Trump's USPS Sabotage Strategy Has Backfired in a Big Way
Nobody besides the echo chamber of the far-right conspiracy theory media ever accused Donald Trump of being smart. While he may think in his cobwebbed brain corroded by the effects of years of Propecia use that his campaign against the Post Office is ingenious, it is actually backfiring on him in a big way. Or, as Trump would say "bigly." Americans are motivated to show up early to vote, complicating Trump's attempts to undermine the integrity of the election by sowing chaos on election night. This happens at a very inopportune time for Trump.
Early Voting Means Less of an October Comeback if Trump Can Even Make One
We all remember when everything came undone for the overconfident Clinton Campaign back in the waking nightmare that was 2016. Trump rallied in the final days of the campaign, aided by an assist from James Comey and his reopening of the email investigation eleven days before the election. This swayed enough undecided voters to turn Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania in favor of Trump, giving us four years of this fascist bad dream.
Donald Trump does not want people voting early for many reasons. This is why he felt that undermining the Post Office would disenfranchise Democratic voters and keep people home on Election Day. However, polls are showing that Americans plan on voting early in record numbers. 63% of Americans plan on casting their vote in some form before November 3. Many of them plan on showing up in person to vote early as people like Barack Obama has been recommending. For Trump, this trend towards early voting comes at an awful time.
In fact, as parts of the country have begun early voting, the news could not be any worse for Trump. This week, North Carolinians have started to receive their ballots in the mail. The first votes in this key election have now been cast. All you need to do is look at the headlines to see how that is going to go for Trump. The only thing that pushed his disgusting comments about our war dead from the headlines was the more disgusting news how he deliberately lied to the country about the dangers of COVID-19.
It Is a Good Thing That Americans Are Voting During the Fall
However, Donald Trump cannot even be thought of as playing checkers while others are playing chess. That would be giving him too much credit. He does not have the 3D thinking to realize that he is encouraging people to vote even earlier during a time when COVID-19 is still out of control and a vaccine is far into the future. Trump should have anticipated a fall of discontent when trying to kneecap the Post Office. Nonetheless, this is the same person who thought it a good idea to ask the Ukranian President to "do us a favor."
September has been a brutal month for Trump, and it promises to only get worse. While Americans are more focused than ever on voting early, Trump is set to field live voter questions at a town hall meeting on ABC on September 15. You know already that this will not go well. After that is the first presidential debate. Trump, who fashions himself as a natural-born debater, has not had any debate prep. That too will go swimmingly well for "The Donald." In the meantime, Americans are already keeping score with their ballots at home, if they have not mailed them in already.
Democrats have had time to adjust to Trump's strategy of crippling the USPS. They have had time to talk to their voters about the best way to vote. Moreover, they have raised the issue of voter suppression through the Post Office to the top of voter consciousness. Now, Democratic voters will be voting by mail and in person well in advance of the election. The Biden Campaign should have a sense of turnout well before Election Day in order to calibrate their ground game for Election Day. In effect, Trump's hairbrained scheme to sabotage the election with his hapless crony Louis DeJoy is a gift for Democrats. As Trump likes to say on Twitter, "thank you very much President T!"
Even if Trump manages to make a comeback in October, it is in front of a shrinking audience of voters. Most will have already cast their verdict on all of the winning done during the Trummp Presidency.
