Profile in Courage in the Republican Senate

All one needs to do in order to get the idea that turnout in the 2020 elections is essential is to see Republican senators in action. Congressmen like the noted selfless patriot Louie Gohmert are limited in the damage that they can do thanks to the presence of Nancy Pelosi. However, aided and abetted by the top cover of Moscow Mitch McConnell, the GOP senators cause real damage to this country on a daily basis. This is even more true during national emergencies like the one that we are experiencing now. Here are four examples of conduct from Republican senators that would hardly qualify for the pages of the book Profiles in Courage. Unfortunately, only two of these brave senators are on the ballot in 2020.

Senator Ron Johnson

Not being content to remain known as a large footnote in President Trumps Ukraine misadventures, the senator from Wisconsin continues to break new ground with his repeated intemperate statements in an era where we expect studied calm from our legislators.

Mind you, Johnson votes routinely to put jurists on the bench who oppose abortion due to his strong pro-life stance. However, when it comes to protecting the lives of those who are already born, Johnson expresses a cavalier attitude in saying that coronavirus will result in the death of "no more than 3.4 percent of our population." Let us do the math for Senator Johnson just in case he failed middle school mathematics. This would equate to over ten million deaths given the U.S. population.

Then, to top of his stunning indifference, Johnson joined seven other senators in opposing a bipartisan relief bill. Wisconsin voters must wait until 2022 to give Johnson his deserved reckoning.

Senator John Cornyn

Big John continues to blaze new paths in xenophobic lows as he seeks to persuade Texas voters to give him six more years of pandering to Dear Leader Trump. Adopting Trump's racist trope of the day, Cornyn has sought to defend the President when he inexplicably refers to this as the "Chinese Virus."

Cornyn even criticized Chinese for eating snakes, implying that this has caused the virus. He conveniently forgets that this is considered a delicacy in Texas, although Cornyn has conveniently forgotten Texas in many ways during his term in the Senate. Cornyn continues to try to point a finger at China as opposed to coming together with his fellow senators to save the country.

Lucky for Texas voters, they have the chance to send Big John home to Texas so he can finally remember what it would be like to listen to a Texan.

Senator Rand Paul

We have a special place in our heart for the man who so incensed his next-door neighbor that he got his ribs broken in a landscaping dispute. Paul does his best to play obstructionist every time that there is something pressing that needs to be done, playing to his imaginary legions of supports as if the movement his mother created actually still exists.

As usual, he has hijacked the legislative process and managed to delay the passage of a vital package for relief. He then proceeded to refer to undocumented immigrants as "non-people" before voting against the vital relief package. From shutting down the government singlehandedly to gumming up the works of every major legislation, Rand Paul always comes through for the American people.

Senator Ben Sasse

The Nebraska Senator actually gave us hope that he would be one of the few responsible Republicans during the Trump Administration when he showed an independent streak after the 2016 election. However, faced with the prospect of a primary for crossing the Dear Leader, Sasse shredded whatever bravery he had by knuckling under and falling into line.

Instead of following up on the promise of being a different kind of Republican, Sasse has now joined the lunatic wing of the party by opposing the coronavirus bill. Sasse has indicated that he will oppose practically any action out of Washington during this crisis in a bid to let the states decide the proper solutions. Of course, the purveyor of federalism in a time of crisis just needs to look next door to Oklahoma for an example of Republican sensibility when the Oklahoma governor sent out a tweet mocking the entire coronavirus crisis. Needless to say, Sasse is trying to resuscitate his 2024 chances at the expense of the country during an emergency.
