Note to Democrats: Calm Down and Let Biden Do His Thing

Every panicked Democrat has been a free source of advice for Joe Biden's campaign whether it is wanted or not. Of course, it is hard to blame Democrats who are terrified of the prospect of four more years of Donald Trump. However, here is a memo for the scared Democrats who believe that Biden is frittering away his chance to be President. Biden is doing just fine right now. He is showing himself just enough to be present while keeping the focus squarely on Donald Trump. In actuality, history will remember Biden's campaign as one of the tighter operations in recent memory.

Not Being Donald Trump Will Be Good Enough

The central premise of Biden's campaign is that he is not Donald Trump and stands the best chance of beating him. While progressives did not necessarily vote for him in the primary, they have shown a willingness to embrace him and donate to the campaign. As a result, success for Biden is measured by how firmly he can establish that he is the Anti-Trump. Moreover, Biden is not going to be able to establish supremacy over Trump in the battle for the daily headlines. Accordingly, the Biden Campaign has learned that it is better not to even try.

What Biden is doing is selectively and strategically emerging in the places where he thinks that he can draw the sharpest contrast with the President. Take for example the way that he has handled the police shooting and protests in Kenosha. Biden gave a high-profile speech that turned many of Trump's own attacks against him in a masterful way. Moreover, he waited to see how Trump's visit to the city went before he plotted his own. He will be able to show empathy and try to unite people in the wake of Trump's divisive screed. Even more important, he will be seen meeting with the family of Jacob Blake, a step that Trump refused to take.

While many are complaining that Biden is staying in his basement while Trump is out there campaigning, Biden's choices have been very strategically tailored to make a point. First, by selectively emerging and campaigning in a socially distanced manner, Biden is drawing a contrast with Trump. If Biden was out every single day, he would be contradicting his own argument that he listens to the expert. This way, each of Biden's appearances has more meaning. If he can stick to message in these surgical appearances, each trip and visit will have its own significance.

Biden Is Running the Right Campaign for This Election

The truth is that what Biden is doing is working right now. Not only has he built a durable lead, but he has also improved his own favorability ratings. In addition, his campaign has smashed all previous records for fundraising by taking in over $360 million in August. There was the reason why Democrats chose a steady old hand to be their standard-bearer. Now, they have to trust the man that they chose to do the job that he has promised. If polls and fundraising numbers are any indication, Biden is doing the job.

Democrats need to stop gnashing their teeth. Biden's campaign is erasing the memories of the walking disaster that was the Hillary Clinton campaign. There is no backbiting and the campaign has been airtight in terms of leaks. This is an experienced politician who has learned the lessons of a five decade political career. Biden has got himself to the point where he has a large lead with two months left until the election. At this point, he is better off making selective campaign appearances and preparing for the debates. He can hardly afford a gaffe or a stumble as the debates occur right when early voting is starting in many states.

We need to stop with the unsolicited advice to the Biden Campaign. Thankfully, the campaign has been resolute enough to stick with their choices. The armchair campaign chairpersons are not helping things because they contribute to the narrative that Biden is barely campaigning. In a way, they are doing Donald Trump's work for him. With two months to go before the election, staying the course and not overexposing Biden may be the best way to run out the clock. Not being Donald Trump will be good enough to win this election given that he makes himself more radioactive by the day.
