Memo to Democrats: Don't Freak Out About the Republican National Convention
Many have recoiled at the horror show that is also known as the Republican National Convention that has unfolded live from federal government property in violation of the law. The common reaction has been that the Republicans are trying to pull off yet another con job aimed at rewriting history and hoodwinking the general public yet again. We are here to tell liberals to take a deep breath and calm down. There is an old saying that sunlight is the best disinfectant. The best thing right now is for the Republican Party to be exposed right now. Of course, the best prescription for being exposed is actual exposure.
President Trump was personally heavily involved in the preparations for the RNC. Taking time out from his vigorous efforts to guide the federal government through the pandemic, he oversaw the glossy production, theorizing that ratings are the same thing as both. Thanks to the rot that is today's Republican Party, he will not succeed in getting either.
Isolated Readings of Some Ratings Do Not Matter
News headlines trumpeted the fact that the ratings on C-Span for the RNC was more than four times those of the Democratic National Convention. Mind you, Democratic voters do not really watch C-Span. However, the Republicans' efforts to convince themselves that they are "owning the Libs" and are winning are actually good for Team Blue. This will keep them from actually successfully managing to deploy the "Death Star," as deposed Campaign Manager Brad Parscale referred to the best digital operation that $1 billion of dark money can buy.
Where the RNC is really a blessing for Democrats is in the fact that it has provided a great split-screen moment for the American public. With COVID-19 still killing over 1,000 people each day and racial justice protests raging, it is very easily compared to airbrushed white women screaming at an empty room and glassy-eyed presidential children taking full advantage of nepotism to get prime-time speaking slots. This is exactly the visual that the American public needs to understand that today's Republican Party has nothing for them in the way of empathy or solutions to their problem.
Moreover, the fact that the RNC came right after the DNC gives the American public the perfect chance to draw contrasts between the two political parties. They see one party that acknowledged the pandemic and the costs that it was exacting on American families. They see the other party talking about the pandemic in past tense and lauding the leadership of President Trump in defeating it. They see one party acknowledging reality while the other party constructs an alternate one.
There Are Very Few Undecided Voters Left for the Parties to Fight Over
The truth is that there are very few persuadable voters at this point. Some surveys have shown that as many as 96% of voters have made up their minds. Now, the parties are fighting over the last 4% of voters while trying to ensure that their own voters turn out in large numbers. Joe Biden's poll numbers are strong enough that he can even win the election if he captures very few of the remaining undecided voters since he is already over 50% in many polls.
The only thing that Democrats would need to worry about is whether the hoopla of the RNC would excite the base to turn out in greater numbers for Trump. There is the notion of the hidden Trump supporter that did not vote in 2016 but will come out for him in 2020. However, eight hours of television programming and airbrushing will not be enough to change the mind of someone who was on the fence about voting.
Some polls have slightly moved in Trump's direction over the past few days. However, this is a natural tightening of the race that always occurs right before Labor Day and is nothing to worry about. Nothing the Republicans are doing on television this week will actually succeed in broadening their base. When they are trying to throw red meat to their base, they alienate the rest of the electorate. In the meantime, when the dust settles on this week, Americans will reflect on the pandemic, the protests and violence in Kenosha and the courageous protests of professional athletes. Then, they will ask what the Republicans proposed that will actually make these situations any better. The answer is nothing.
