Memo to Democrats: Calm Down About Biden's Vice Presidential Choice

Joe Biden has been nearing his vice presidential pick and day now for the last two weeks. Unfortunately, the selection process has not played out as intended and has been largely chewed over and debated in public. This may have a damaging effect of crippling Biden's pick before he even makes it. At the same time, supporters of the women who would be passed over may end up embittered and attacking the woman who Biden choose. As a result, there is a simple message to all Democrats as Biden's pick near. Everyone needs to calm down and take a deep breath.

The Public Vet Is Making Biden Look Weak and Disorganized

By choosing to conduct the vice presidential selection in public, Biden's team has actually done a disservice to his own campaign. The Biden Campaign has apparently tried to make maximum usage of the press to float trial balloons to see how they play. He started this with floating Amy Klobuchar back in May, a suggestion that was greeted with near-outrage on the Left for rightful reasons. His most recent trial balloon was Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass. After she received a day or two of positive press, she was torn down in the press over past comments about Cuba and the Church of Scientology. Another leak of the Biden team's suspicion of Kamala Harris also caused outrage.

The upshot of all of this is that Democrats need to simply accept and embrace whoever Biden chooses. The result of the use of the media to vet the Vice Presidential nominee has already caused some of Biden's July momentum to evaporate as the process has become messy. In the meantime, the Biden Campaign will most likely need to be playing defense from the moment that they name his running mate.

It is vital for all wings of the Democratic Party to keep their outrage to themselves the moment that pick is announced. Otherwise, Democrats are only doing President Trump's work for him as he is looking for any crack in the facade to exploit in order to cement his autocratic grip on power. This has not been what has transpired to date. The result is that Biden looks disorganized and beholden to certain wings of the party when he needs to look strong. At the same time, what is usually the cause for a large bounce will now have an anticlimactic end whenever the running mate is actually named.

Biden's Campaign Needs to Get the Rollout of the Running Mate Exactly Correct

Thus, it is even more vital than ever for Biden's team to be on message and nail the actual launch of the running mate. They are already starting behind the curve due to the messiness of the process. There will likely be less than a week from the time that the announcement comes to the virtual Democratic National Convention. Any controversy or misstep can keep Biden from getting any bounce. The criticality comes from the fact that the Republican Convention comes one week afterwards. Given President Trump's ability to dominate every news cycle, this will likely be the only ten days that Biden has to make his own impression on the electorate.

This is why it is even more essential for any discontented Democrats to keep their opinions in check and get behind Biden and his running mate no matter what. The specter of 2016 and the voters who just stayed home still haunts the Democratic Party now. The time for everyone to have their say was in the primary season, which ultimately resulted in a quick victory for Biden. However, the party is still not fully behind their nominee. It is playing out in the unseemly sniping and lobbying for Biden to pick a certain running mate.

Democrats need to realize that the greater good of getting rid of Trump is more important now than each part of the party having their say about Biden's running mate. The proclamations of people who claim that they will refuse to support Biden if he picks a certain candidate are counterproductive and harmful. This restricts Biden's room to operate and leads to even more leaks in the press as Biden's team tries to gauge public reaction. This is where the Democratic Party needs to take a collective Valium and trust the judgement of the man who they voted for to be the nominee.
